In 2006, 137 officers from the DOJ were assaulted, 28 of whom were injured. The following provides information by agency within the DOJ:

  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives:

   17 officers were assaulted, 6 of whom were injured.

   2 of the 6 officers who were injured were assaulted with firearms.

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation:

   55 officers were assaulted, 3 of whom were injured.

  • U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration:

   No officers were assaulted or injured.

  • U.S. Marshals Service:

   65 officers were assaulted, 19 of whom were injured.

   2 of the 19 officers who were injured were assaulted with firearms.

Type of activity

Officers with the DOJ were performing the following activities when they were assaulted:

  • 67 were attempting arrests or serving summonses.
  • 40 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
  • 14 officers were on court duty.
  • 11 officers were maintaining the custody of prisoners.
  • 3 officers were on patrol or guard duty.
  • 2 were performing other law enforcement activities.

Weapons

  • 50 of the 137 DOJ officers were attacked with personal weapons such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 40 officers were attacked with firearms.
  • 12 officers were attacked with vehicles.
  • 35 officers were attacked with other types of weapons.

Disposition information

Law enforcement officials identified 67 suspects in the assaults on the 137 DOJ officers. Disposition information was available for 35 of these suspects at the time of this report:

  • 6 assailants were found guilty, and 7 suspects were awaiting trial.
  • 6 suspects had a prosecutorial opinion pending, and the prosecution declined to press charges against 3 alleged offenders.
  • 3 alleged offenders were found not guilty or had criminal charges dismissed.
  • 8 alleged assailants are deceased.
  • 2 suspects remain at large.
