In 2006, 866 officers from the DHS were assaulted, 118 of whom were injured. The following provides information by agency within the DHS:
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection:
815 officers were assaulted, 109 of whom were injured.
Of the 109 officers who were injured, 2 were assaulted with firearms.
- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement:
30 officers were assaulted, 6 of whom were injured.
21 officers were assaulted, 3 of whom were injured.
Of the 3 officers who were injured, 1 officer was injured with a firearm.
Type of activity
Officers from the DHS were performing the following activities at the time they were attacked:
- 604 officers were assigned to patrol or guard duty.
- 97 officers were attempting arrests or serving summonses.
- 6 officers were involved in investigations or searches.
- 3 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
- 156 officers were performing other types of official tasks.
Weapons
- 212 of the 866 DHS officers were physically confronted by persons using personal weapons such as hands, fists, or feet.
- 64 officers were attacked with firearms.
- 56 officers were assaulted with vehicles.
- 10 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
- 2 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
- 522 officers were attacked with other types of weapons.
Disposition information
Law enforcement officials identified 44 suspects in assaults on the 866 DHS officers. Disposition information on 19 of these assailants was provided at the time of this report. Of these:
- 5 known assailants were found guilty; 6 suspected assailants were awaiting trial.
- 1 alleged assailant had the charges dismissed or was found not guilty.
- 7 suspected assailants remain at large.
