Figure 5.1 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older, by State, for 2002. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (9.08 to 10.19 percent) were Colorado, District of Columbia, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Wyoming. States in the next highest group (8.19 to 9.07 percent) were Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, and Wisconsin. States in the mid group (7.58 to 8.18 percent) were Arkansas, Delaware, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia. States in the next lowest group (6.93 to 7.57 percent) were California, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Washington. States in the lowest group (6.29 to 6.92 percent) were Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Mississippi, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
