Chapters are formed when a group of people wish to expand the efforts of The Maryland Native Plant Society in a specific geographic region. Working within policies set by the board, Chapters have a considerable degree of autonomy. Chapter boards address local issues and tailor programs to their own area's interests and needs.
Most Chapters use either counties or ecosystem boundaries and can have overlapping jurisdictions. At this point, members cannot choose their Chapter affiliation; it is based on the address of their membership. Affiliation is automatically granted to each member within the appropriate Chapter.
The Society can provide members with time, resources, and leadership skills to devote to the Chapter. All Chapters must abide by the basic mission of the Maryland Native Plant Society (view the mission statement), and for all Society policies, the word Chapter can be substituted for the word Committee. For information on the expectations for a Chapter, view the Chapter Guidelines (PDF, ~62 KB).
Some Benefits of Being a Chapter
- use of the MNPS logo
- coverage under MNPS liability insurance
- use of MNPS sales tax exemption on purchase for Society and Chapter events
- activities promoted in Native News as well as on the MNPS Web site
Unless specified in the program description, all activities are open to the general public. Participants do not need to be members of the Society nor active Chapter members to benefit from our programs.
No extra dues are charged for Chapter affiliation. All members of MNPS are welcome to attend any Chapter event.
