GLOBE Announces New Partnership with MELISSA

A South Africa-based organization devoted to promoting local environmental planning by local governments has announced its intentions to collaborate with GLOBE throughout Sub Saharan Africa. On May 26, 1999, GLOBE signed a joint project agreement with MELISSA (Managing the Environment Locally in Sub-Saharan Africa), a program funded by the World Bank, the European Union, and the governments of Sweden and Norway. GLOBE Program Director Tom Pyke and MELISSA Program coordinator Ousseynou Eddje Diop signed the agreement in a special ceremony held at the GLOBE Program headquarters in Washington, D.C.

MELISSA will encourage municipalities working on local environmental action plans to incorporate GLOBE measurements into their environmental profiles and to work with GLOBE schools. "I find this cooperation meaningful because it focuses on the three most important issues facing the future of Africa today," Mr. Diop said at the ceremony. "These are the importance of technology, the environment, and education. Every day needs are important, too, but these issues will affect the Africa our children will live in, and in turn, our children will have an impact on each of these issues for future generations as well."
