VMAC MEETING POSTPONED
The meeting of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee (VMAC) originally scheduled for December 10-11, 1998, has been postponed. FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) officials hope to reschedule the Committee meeting for dates in January. CVM will announce the new dates for the meeting as soon as they are set.
CVM decided to postpone the meeting to allow the VMAC members, the meeting’s invited guests, and interested stakeholders, adequate time to review and provide thoughtful comments at the VMAC meeting on a document that will set out a risk-based framework for evaluating the microbial safety of antimicrobial drugs intended for use in food-producing animals.
The document, "A Proposed Framework for Evaluating and Preventing Adverse Effects on Human Health Associated with the Use of Antimicrobials in Food-Producing Animals," which is often referred to as the "Framework Document," is expected to be released within a week.
