VMAC Meeting Rescheduled for January

The meeting of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee (VMAC), originally scheduled for December 1998, has been rescheduled for January 25-26, 1999. The meeting will be open to the public.

The meeting, which will start at 8:30 a.m. both days and is scheduled to end at 4:00 p.m. on the 26th, is being held in the Holiday Inn-Gaithersburg, Two Montgomery Village Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD. The focus of the meeting will be to discuss a proposed framework on how to evaluate the potential public health risk from microbial effects associated with the use of antimicrobials in food animals.

Earlier this month, FDA released for review and comment a document entitled "A Proposed Framework for Evaluating and Assuring the Human Safety of the Microbial Effects of Antimicrobial New Animal Drugs Intended for Use in Food-Producing Animals." This document, which will be discussed at the VMAC meeting, sets out a risk-based framework for evaluating the microbial safety of antimicrobial drugs intended for use in food-producing animals.

Copies of "A Proposed Framework for Evaluating and Assuring the Human Safety of the Microbial Effects of Antimicrobial New Animal Drugs Intended for Use in Food-Producing Animals" may be obtained from CVM's Internet Home Page or by calling or writing CVM's Communications Staff at FDA/Center for Veterinary Medicine, HFV-12, 7500 Standish Place, Rockville, MD 20855, 301-594-1755. Send one self-addressed adhesive label to assist in processing your requests.

Oral presentations from the public are tentatively scheduled for the morning of January 26, but may begin on the afternoon of January 25. Those desiring to make formal oral presentations should notify Jon Scheid, Center for Veterinary Medicine, Food and Drug Administration, 7500 Standish Place, Rockville, MD 20855, 301-827-6514, fax 301-594-1831. Notification must be made by January 15. Submit a brief statement of the general nature of the evidence or arguments to be presented, the names and addresses of proposed participants, and the approximate amount of time requested. Interested persons may also submit written statements for consideration by the Committee. These statements should be submitted to Jon Scheid by January 15.

Additional information about questions to be discussed at the meeting will be included on CVM's Internet Home Page in the future.
