Strategic Compensation Conference 2000 Awaits You

It's not too late to register for the second annual Strategic Compensation Conference. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) will host Strategic Compensation Conference 2000: Choosing the Best for Today and Tomorrow August 28-29, 2000, at the Washington Hilton & Towers, Washington, D.C. OPM also will offer a full day of informative post-conference workshops on August 30, 2000.

This stimulating conference will provide Federal managers and human resources practitioners an excellent opportunity to network with one another. Speakers will discuss a variety of topics relating to the Federal compensation environment—performance management, pay and leave administration, position classification, and efforts to improve the compensation tools available to support agency missions.

Proposed Conference Sessions. The Strategic Compensation Conference will offer five program updates and a wide variety of other concurrent breakout sessions, including:

Performance Management Update. With new variations on a familiar theme, you will hear the latest happenings in this ever-evolving program area.

Does Pass/Fail Appraisal Work? Speakers will review OPM's study of several agencies and their experiences using a two-level appraisal program.

Linking Budget to Performance at GSA. Hear how the General Services Administration (GSA) uses goal-setting, results measures, and recognition to improve its performance.

SES Performance Management 2000. Learn about current initiatives for the Senior Executive Service (SES) performance management regulations.

The Balancing Act. Agency representatives will explain how their agencies implemented the balanced measures promoted by the National Partnership for Reinventing Government.

Strategic Compensation Update. Hear the latest on OPM's efforts to improve Federal compensation in ways that will allow agencies to better support their goals and missions.

Variable Pay. Find out how some agencies are determining whether variable pay is the right tool to assist them in achieving their missions.

Classification Update. The Information Technology standard study and the response to the new Job Family Position Classification Standards for Human Resources Management are just a few of the topics sure to lead this session's discussion.

Reengineering the Position Classification Standards Development and Issuance Process. This session will highlight the work OPM is doing to create a more efficient process for developing job standards.

Leave Update. OPM leave experts will discuss the ever-changing world of Federal leave programs and policies and also provide insight on how some agencies administer leave programs.

Making Your Way Through the Maze of Family-Friendly Leave Programs. This overview of the various family-friendly leave programs and policies will provide answers to questions that often baffle agencies and employees alike.

Pay Update. This session will focus on topics such as the latest on the 2001 pay adjustments, locality pay area changes, progress on improving the National Compensation Survey program, and legislative initiatives.

Effective Compensation Alternatives—The 3 Rs. You will hear an in-depth discussion about using recruitment and relocation bonuses and retention allowances in designing effective compensation strategies.
