October 07, 1996:
German GLOBE Schools Team-up With Baltimore Museum

The Contemporary in Baltimore and the Kunsthaus in Hamburg Germany have teamed up to sponsor an Internet art and education exhibition entitled Aboard the CyberClipper: A Transatlantic Technological Adventure. The exhibit opens on October 12, 1996, and will run through January 10, 1997. The URL for the exhibition is http://www.glows.com/cyberclipper.

In addition to online works of art, there is a Study Guide which includes classroom activities encouraging Internet literacy and critical thinking about the Internet's impact on our culture. For copies of the study guide, visit the Website or send email to thecontemporary@softaid.net. GLOBE Country Coordinator for Education in Germany, Mr. Bernd Tissler, and GLOBE students in Germany have already begun using the Study Guide and Website. The Study Guide was developed by the museum in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, Maryland Public Television, and the Pride of Baltimore, Inc.

The exhibit is named after the clipper ships of the 19th century which went in search of new frontiers and voyaged into new lands. It coincides with the historic sailing of the replica Baltimore Clipper, The Pride of Baltimore II, on its return voyage from Hamburg, Germany to Baltimore, Maryland. Creators of this exhibit demonstrate how the cultural transformations once generated by sailing to new worlds are today occurring through the Internet.

On December 9, 1996, GLOBE students in Germany and Baltimore will be invited to participate in an on-line conference discussing the Internet and its application.
