Alftamyrarskoli, Reykjavik, Iceland

12 June 1998

GLOBE students in Iceland are getting some very high level recognition for their scientific studies. Since the students at Alftamyrarskoli and Fjolbrautaskoli Sudurnesja began reporting data in 1997, they have hosted a number of visitors, including the President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson. The President accompanied the students to their GLOBE weather station and learned how the students take temperature, precipitation. and pH measurements. He also visited a GLOBE hydrology site to learn about surface water measurements. "The President thought we are doing something very interesting," reported a GLOBE student.

Other special guests have included the Minister of Environmental Affairs, officials from the Ministry of Education, and the U.S. Ambassador to Iceland Day Mount. "My students are very enthusiatic about GLOBE and all those visitors makes GLOBE even more exciting for them," said GLOBE Teacher Kristin Axelsdottir.
