The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Joins GLOBE!

Saudi Arabia flagThe GLOBE Program welcomes the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the Program's 99th GLOBE country. Officials from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Education and the United States Department of State signed the bilateral Agreement September 30, 2002 in Washington D.C.

His Excellency Dr. Mohamed A. Rasheed, Minister of Education, and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Patricia de Stacy Harrison, signed the official bilateral agreement.

"GLOBE is an outstanding example of building mutual understanding through cooperative educational (science) projects," said Patricia de Stacy Harrison, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs.

"This program will provide the students of Saudi Arabia with many stimulating investigative opportunities to explore the environment and also allow them to make scientific contributions to research conducted by scientists worldwide," said Lyn D. Wigbels, GLOBE's Assistant Director for International Programs.

"We are thrilled that students and educators from Saudi Arabia are now joining in this exciting, hands-on science and educational opportunity that is now enjoyed by 99 countries," Ms. Wigbels added.

The Signing Ceremony, held in the State Department's Treaty Room, was attended by Saudi Arabia's Director General of Education, Dr. Ahmed Al-Ahmed, and Cultural Attache, Dr. Mazyed Ibrahim Almazyed, and Mr. Ron Birk, Director, Applications Division, NASA Office of Earth Science.
