July 05, 2000:
Monaco Joins GLOBE

GLOBE BulletinMonaco just became the 90th country in The GLOBE Program.

His Serene Highness Prince Albert, speaking at the signing ceremony in Monaco, said "Our world has become inescapably 'global' and countries can no longer live isolated from one another.... Both business and the public sector have an eminent role to play along side with the government's role. The environmental field is a good example of this interdependence and globalization.

"The GLOBE Program will allow all primary and secondary school children from around the world and Monaco to join their efforts and help scientists protect the environment by taking a regular set of environmental measures at the schools and reporting their data via the Internet.

"Participation in The GLOBE Program will show students that work can be collective and shared with people they don't even know thousands of miles away," the Prince said. "This will allow children to have access to some of the most powerful tools of the scientific community in order to better know and protect our Earth."

Signing the official papers making Monaco a GLOBE country was His Excellency Bernard Fautrier, Minister for International Cooperation for Environment and Development and GLOBE Program Director Thomas Pyke. Samuel Brock, U.S. Consul General to Monaco, also spoke at the ceremony, and referred to his past experience with GLOBE in Benin.

The ceremony took place at Monaco's Oceanographic Museum, which is dedicated to research and protection of the marine environment and its bio-diversity, the Prince noted. He also pointed out that The International SeaKeepers Society, designed to collect scientific data from the oceans and great seas, is partnering with GLOBE to provide information otherwise unavailable.
