N.A.B.I. Native American Basketball Invitational

PHOENIX, Arizona - On Saturday June 25, America West Arena again will play host to a 3rd annual all-Native tournament, better known in Indian Country as NABI, with some new exciting developments. It will be presented by and called "Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation Native American Basketball Invitational". "NABI brings national exposure to young Native American Athletes who are under represented at the collegiate level and who may not have the financial resources to attend college. NABI showcases their individual talents and skills as well as their ability to function as an integral part of a team. Hopefully, this exposure brings offers of scholarships to our students/participants and we hope this opportunity is not overlooked as we strive to build a strong Nation for all races and nationalities of this Great Country. The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is extremely proud and honored to be associated with this event" says Raphael Bear President of Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation.

In its third year, not only has NABI doubled in size and become the biggest national recognized Native tournament, it has gained the support of the Arizona local Tribes. Along side Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation, Ak-Chin Indian Community will also be a sponsor of NABI 2005, with other tribes not far behind.

Another exciting development, the championship games will be televised live on KAZTV. “The support & unity among the tribes, Native leaders and our sponsors continue to elevate the tournament and plays a huge part in the rapid growth and success. Having the games televised will allow the excitement of the event to be brought to thousands of viewers” says GinaMarie Scarpa- Mabry and Mark West, organizers of NABI.

Since its inception, NABI which debuted in July of 2003, has created opportunities for 15 Native American students to receive college athletic scholarships. NABI 2005 will feature 48 teams of Native American high school students-athletes, male and female from throughout the U.S. and Canada, allowing them an exclusive stage before college scouts. First round games kick-off on June 22-24 at local high schools and reservation gyms with the semi-finals and televised championship games moving to AWA on June 25.

Partial proceeds from the event will benefit the NABI Foundation, whose mission is to fund college mentoring programs and the educational needs of Native American college students.

NABI 2005 sponsors also include: Nike, Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, KAZTV, Arizona Republic, KISSFM, 21Native.com, Native Voice Hyatt Regency Phoenix and Hilton Pointe Squaw Peak Resort.
