How To Become A WSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer
- Contact the WSU Extension office in your county for information on joining a Master Gardener program in your county, schedules for classes, and fees for training. For more details about the qualifications and duties of volunteers please see the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program Handbook.
Contact the WSU Extension office in your county with gardening questions or to find out about local Master Gardener events, classes and projects.
- Request and complete an application form. Some counties offer online application forms on their web site. Because WSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers work with children and the elderly, a criminal background check is required for all our volunteers. Due to the popularity of the program, in some locations you may be placed on a waiting list.
- If selected as a potential Master Gardener volunteer, you will be contacted with additional instructions.
- Those selected to enter the program will be asked to review and sign the enrollment documents and pay any fees for Basic Training. Ask your program coordinator in your county about the availability of scholarships for Basic Training.
- You must attend each session of the Basic Training course and complete and pass the related subject exams. These are open book quizzes. A final exam is also administered.
- Next, complete a one-year service internship for the number of hours specified within your county WSU Extension Master Gardener program (typically about 40 hours to be completed within one year).
- After completion of all the above you become a WSU Extension Certified Master Gardener.
- Training requirements for persons transferring from other counties or other state programs are handled on a case-by-case basis. Contact the program coordinator of the program you wish to join.
