Credit: NASA An otherwise familiar lake holds many surprises when viewed through NASA's electronic eyes. NASA Glenn is using airplanes outfitted with high-tech instruments to study Lake Erie. Join us on Sat., Jan. 17, to find out how the aircraft are instrumented and flown and hear about the science generated by these flights.

11 a.m. - Alan Micklewright, NASA Pilot

Glenn's Chief of Aircraft Operations Alan Micklewright will describe NASA Glenn's research aircraft, including the S-3B Viking, Learjet 25, DHC-6 Twin-Otter and T-34C Turbomentor. He'll also discuss the planes' past and future missions.

1 p.m. - John Lekki, NASA Engineer

Glenn has teamed up with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to monitor the growth of potentially harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie. Research Engineer John Lekki will explain why some types of algae cause problems and describe the state-of-the-art imaging system NASA Glenn uses to detect it.
