Lewis' Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Program (LERCIP)
 

The LERCIP program at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio consists of internships for High School Students, College Students, Secondary School Teachers, and NASA Scholars.


High School Program

Program Description:
This is an educational program that provides an 8-week paid internship beginning June 15, 2009 through August 7, 2009 for current high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in science, technology, engineering, math and professional administration.

How to Apply:
Applications will be mailed to local high school point of contacts in early December 2008 and the application deadline is February 13, 2009. Due to the limited number of slots available, local high schools will receive a limited number of applications. The LERCIP High School point of contact list is available here.

Eligibility Requirements:
For consideration in this program, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen and meet each of the following criteria:
• Must be 16 years old by June 15, 2009;
• Must be a permanent resident of Northeast Ohio and attend high school within a 50 mile radius of NASA Glenn Research Center;
• Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale;
• Must be willing to participate in a formal interview, if chosen as a finalist, as part of the placement process; and
• Must be available on a full-time basis (Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week) from June 15, 2009 through August 7, 2009.

LERCIP College

Program Description:
LERCIP provides 10-week summer internships opportunities for students pursuing degrees in engineering, science, mathematics and other aerospace-related disciplines, as well as majors that lend support to NASA's mission such as business and public administration, finance and accounting. Students engage in authentic NASA-related, mission-based R&D activities. The program is intended to encourage college students (from graduating high school seniors to PhD candidates) to pursue and earn undergraduate and graduate degrees. Students spend their summer at GRC working and learning in a professional environment using NASA research facilities and resources. Students work side-by-side with a GRC mentor and are incorporated into the day-to-day activities of the Center to the fullest extent possible. LERCIP has an educational component where students attend and participate in a variety of planned activities from professional development workshops to presenting at the Summer Research Symposium.

The internships are offered under the auspices of Lewis' Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Program (LERCIP), a collaborative undertaking by the Educational Programs Office at the Glenn Research Center (GRC) and the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI).

Interested eligible students will need to complete application and return the requested materials to OAI (address below) by January 31, 2009. Please remember that you will be required to mail in your transcripts and a teacher recommendation letter. Also, during the application process you will be required to submit a Microsoft Word version of your resume.

Eligibility:

For consideration for the program, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen and meet each of the following criteria:

• Must be a full-time student pursuing a baccalaureate or higher degree in a field of science, engineering, technology, mathematics and professional administration at an accredited college or university throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
• College-bound graduates or 2-year college students with demonstrable plans to pursue baccalaureate degrees are also eligible.
• Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
• Must be able to start on one of the scheduled start dates and complete entire 10-week tenure, on a full-time basis (Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week).


2009 Start Dates:
Session #1: May 18 - Session: #2: June 1 - Session: #3: June 8

Salary:
Interns receive a biweekly salary for their appointments. The amount of salary depends on the academic standing achieved by the student at the time tenure begins. Salary breakdown is as follows:

• Freshman: $4,000.00
• Sophomore: $4,000.00
• Junior: $5,000.00
• Senior: $5,000.00
• Masters: $6,000.00
• PhD: $6,000.00

Program Description:

LERCIP Teacher Program

Program Description:
This is an educational program that provides internships for teachers interested in expanding their knowledge in the area of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Internships of a 10-week duration are available during the summer months at the NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, OH. The internships are offered under the auspices of Lewis' Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Program (LERCIP), a collaborative undertaking by the Educational Programs Office at the Glenn Research Center and the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI). Teachers will work with a GRC mentor to complete identified assignments.

Eligibility:
Internships are available only to U.S. citizens who are employed in the U.S. as full-time teachers as secondary school teachers.
