Code of Federal Regulations: Generating CFR Citation Links

In the Code of Federal Regulations, the information needed to create a CFR citation link is contained within the header of a CFR text file. For example:

[CITE: 21CFR310.502]
[Revised as of April 1, 1997]

Using this header information, it is possible to determine the title, part, section/subpart, and year. The title, part, and section/subpart are located within the CITE line. Meanwhile, the date is contained in the revision year line.

  • Title: Is the numeric value to the left of "CFR" in the CITE line.
  • Part: Is the numeric value to the right of "CFR" and preceding the period (".") in the CITE line.
  • Section/Subpart: Is the numeric value to the right of the period (".") in the CITE line.
    • A subpart is a letter of the alphabet (A-Z) that is used to retrieve an entire subpart of the CFR rather than many individual sections. For example: Subpart E.

  • Revision Year: To link to a specific year's citation, enter the four digit year from the "Revised as of" line. When omitted, the most recent available citation online will be retrieved.

Therefore, in the above example, the following information can be determined:

  • Title: 21
  • Part: 310
  • Section: 502
  • Year: 1997

To input the CFR Citation link into the form, copy the appropriate information following CITE: and input it into the appropriate box on the form.
