FDA's Dr. Jesse Goodman Honored by Institute of Medicine

Dr. Jesse Goodman, the Director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), has been elected active member of The Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies, one of the world's most prestigious organizations in the medical field. Membership in IOM is among of the highest honors accorded in the United States for contributions to the advancement in medical sciences, health care, and public health.

"Jesse's distinction speaks volumes not only about his outstanding achievements as a cutting-edge scientist and a medical professional, but also about his leadership of an FDA Center that protects our nation against bioterrorism and emerging infectious diseases, and helps ensure the safety of vaccines, blood and tissues," said Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, Acting Commissioner of Food and Drugs. "The IOM honor is another recognition of the professional excellence that is the basis of FDA's regulatory decisions."

Dr. Goodman is a Harvard graduate who received his medical doctorate at the Albert Einstein Medical Center and spent 13 years teaching and doing research at the University of Minnesota before joining the FDA in 1998. In 1995, he spearheaded research that isolated the etiologic agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE), a new human disease, and has since characterized fundamental events involved in infection of leukocytes. Dr. Goodman is the author of numerous scientific works and, in addition to directing CBER, serves as staff physician and infectious diseases consultant at the National Institutes of Health and the National Naval Medical Center.

IOM was established in 1970 to honor professional achievement in the health sciences and to serve as a national resource for independent analysis and recommendations on issues related to medicine, biomedical sciences, and health. Its members are selected for their outstanding record in health professions, as well as in associated achievements in social and behavioral sciences, law, engineering, and the humanities.
