Biography of Janie B. Scott, MA, OTR/L, FAOTA

Janie B. Scott, MA, OTR/L, FAOTA, is the President of the Homes for Life Coalition of Howard County, Maryland. She has served as a member of the Coalition since its inception in 1999. Janie is also a member of the National Advisory Council on Aging in Place. In addition to these volunteer positions, Janie also serves as a trustee for the Maryland Occupational Therapy Association, and as an advisor for the Professional Advisory Committee at Towson University's Occupational Therapy/Occupational Science Program. Her service has also included the Maryland Statewide Independent Living Council, Americans with Disabilities Act Advisory Committee, and the Commission on Arthritis and Related Diseases.

Janie is the Director of Practice and Ethics Officer for the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. She has direct oversight for all of AOTA’s Special Interest Sections, Subsections and Networks. Janie has an undergraduate degree in occupational therapy from Wayne State University and a graduate degree from the University of Baltimore in legal and ethical studies with an emphasis in healthcare ethics. Janie is the author of three chapters and many articles in the area of ethics, community rehabilitation, older drivers, pervasive developmental disorders, and multicultural issues. Her Everyday Ethics column is regularly published in OT Practice and on the AOTA website. Janie’s most recent presentations have included: Practice Trends in Occupational Therapy, The Road to Increasing Home Modification Availability and Awareness: Lessons from Local Coalitions, and Everyday Ethics.

Some of her recent awards were: Society for the Study of Occupation: USA, Certificate of Appreciation, AOTA Press, Certification of Appreciation, 11th Annual Ellen Garnes Lectureship, Wayne State University, and American Occupational Therapy Association, Roster of Fellows.
