Death Records
The purpose of this guide is to provide information on death records that are available at the Utah History Research Center. Staff members can search for records for patrons unable to visit the Research Center if provided with the year and county for an individual. Availability of records is largely determined by the time period, as enumerated in the sections below.
Information in death records may include name, date and place of birth, cause of death, parent's names and birthplaces, spouse and burial location.

Death Records, Pre-1898
No governmental agencies were required by law to record deaths prior to 1898. Though not required to do so, some municipalities, such as Salt Lake City and Ogden, registered deaths prior to 1898. For other areas of Utah, try cemetery and burial records, newspaper obituaries, or private family and church records.
