News About the U 01/09/09 - New Scientist - Invention: Recycled trash construction materials The amount of waste generated by our society is mind-boggling. Each day, families, business and other organisations produce plastic and food waste in such quantities that landfill space is rapidly running out. Composting the organic component is one option, but not all of the waste can be dealt with in that way. Now Lawrence Reaveley, a civil engineer at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, has come up with a scheme that could reuse some of this excess trash. 01/07/09 - Wall Street Journal via Deseret News - Bankruptcy study offers hope "A lot of bankruptcy studies have argued that bankruptcy gives too much control to management. Businesses and Private Donors In-Step with Band's Inauguration Trip
It's looking more likely with every passing day that the Marching Utes will be playing "Utah Man" at President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration parade in the nation's capital on January 20^th thanks to generous donors. The Ute musicians were invited to participate and, due to the economic slowdown, must rely entirely on private donations to make the trip. The journey will cost the band about $150,000.  Just over $85,000 in gifts and pledges have been received so far.

University of Utah researchers dusted wild deer mice with fluorescent pink, blue, green, yellow and orange talcum powders to show which rodents most often fought or mated with others and thus were most likely to spread deadly hantavirus. The study identified bigger, older mice as the culprits.

The State Science Advisor and the State Advisory Council on Science and Technology have announced that three University of Utah employees are winners of the 2008 Governor's Medal for Science and Technology. Dr. David Chapman, senior vice president for academic affairs, won the award in the category of Academia. Lee Siegel, science news specialist for university public relations, was recognized in a Special Category for his work promoting scientific research at the university. Dr. Mario Capecchi, Nobel Laureate and distinguished professor of human genetics and biology, received a Special Recognition award.
