U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Programs

  • Office on Disability:  oversees the implementation and coordination of disability programs, policies and special initiatives pertaining to the over 54 million persons with disabilities in the United States.
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS)
    • Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999:  This Act modernized the employment services system for people with disabilities and makes it possible for millions of Americans with disabilities to no longer have to choose between taking a job and having health care.
    • The New Freedom Initiative (NFI) was announced by President Bush on February 1, 2001, followed up by the Executive Order 13217 on June 18, 2001. The initiative is a nationwide effort to remove barriers to community living for people of all ages with disabilities and long-term illnesses.
  • Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
    • Disabilities:  CDC works to identify the causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities, help children to develop and reach their full potential, and promote health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities.
  • Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) - Health Disparities:  This program's mission is to improve the quality, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of health care for all Americans. Toward this aim, AHRQ supports research and other activities designed to improve quality and address disparities in health care for racial and ethnic minorities.
  • Office of Minority Health (OMH): This agency's mission is to improve and protect the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that will eliminate health disparities.
  • Administration on Aging (AoA):  provides a comprehensive overview of a wide variety of topics, programs and services related to aging. Whether you are an older individual, a caregiver, a community service provider, a researcher, or a student, you will find valuable information provided in a user-friendly way.
  • Office on Women's Health (OWH):  provides leadership to promote health equity for women and girls through sex/gender-specific approaches."
  • Administration for Children and Families (ACF)
    • Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR): helps provides people in need with critical resources to assist them in becoming integrated members of American society.

U.S. Department of Justice

  • Civil Rights Division:  enforces the Civil Rights Acts of 1957, 1960, 1964, and 1968; the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended through 1992; the Equal Credit Opportunity Act; the Americans with Disabilities Act; the National Voter Registration Act; the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act; the Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act; the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act of 1980; the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act; the Police Misconduct Provision of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994;  Section 102 of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), as amended.  The Division also  coordinating the civil rights enforcement efforts of federal agencies whose programs are covered by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended.  
    • Coordination and Review Section:  a comprehensive, government-wide program of technical and legal assistance, training, interagency coordination, and regulatory, policy, and program review, to assure that federal agencies consistently and effectively enforce various landmark civil rights statutes and related Executive Orders that prohibit discrimination in federally assisted programs and in the federal government’s own programs and activities; enforces civil rights laws affecting recipients of Federal financial assistance from DOJ, including state and local law enforcement agencies, courts, corrections systems, juvenile justice systems, and a variety of non-governmental entities.
  • Disability Rights Section: enforcement, certification, regulatory, coordination, and technical assistance activities required by the Americans with Disabilities Act; and carries out responsibilities under Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act, and Executive Order 12250.
  • Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices (OSC), in the Civil Rights Division, is responsible for enforcing the anti-discrimination provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), 8 U.S.C. § 1324b, which protect U.S. citizens and certain work authorized individuals from employment discrimination based upon citizenship or immigration status.

  • LEP.gov is a clearinghouse, providing and linking to information, tools, and technical assistance regarding Limited English Proficiency and language services for federal agencies, recipients of federal funds, users of federal programs and federally assisted programs, and other stakeholders.
