Angora Fire Area Hazard Tree Removal Underway

South Lake Tahoe, CA. --Hazard tree removal work along Forest Service system roads and trails through the Angora Hazard Tree Removal Project has begun at the FS road intersecting with Pyramid Circle on Monday. A temporary forest closure has been posted in order to provide public safety around equipment and falling trees. The closure prohibits being on, or within 300 feet of Forest Road No. 12N23 from its intersection with Pyramid Circle, then southwest ½ mile. The Closure Order is effective everyday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., January 6, 2009, through January 30, 2009. The temporary forest closure in this specific location may last up to 3 weeks to facilitate the hazard tree removal operations in this portion of the Angora fire.

The project may continue throughout the winter if appropriate snow and freeze conditions are present. Other closures in other portions of the Angora Fire Area can be expected as project work progresses. Information on closure areas will be posted on the LTBMU web page at: www.fs.fed.us/r5/ltbmu.

Hazard trees removed will primarily be utilized as biomass but sawlogs and fuelwood may be available. Some trees will be left in place to provide habitat for wildlife. The project includes extensive measures to protect water quality, particularly in stream environment zones, as well as sensitive wildlife habitat.
