The Earth Day Idea from GLOBE students at Jarrow Montessori School in Boulder, Colorado really took off! They proposed that public transportation in Boulder and Denver be free on Earth Day. Their idea was discussed by the leaders of the Boulder Hop and the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD). The Boulder Hop decided to give free green tickets to riders who had done good deeds for the earth during Earth Week. The RTD decided to sponsor an essay contest for elementary and middle school students. They challenged students to write an essay of 25 words or less telling why riding public transport is the right thing to do.

Mayor Leslie Durgin of Boulder, Cal Marsella, the General Manager of RTD, Penny Puskarich, the Boulder Hop Coordinator, and other officials joined Ms. Burton's GLOBE class to celebrate the success of the Boulder program and to make the first public announcement of the essay contest. They thanked the class for their creative idea and for all of their work to follow it through.

Congratulations on this outstanding idea to the GLOBE class at Jarrow and to teacher Ms. Nancy Burton and students Blake Habermann, Lara Jacobs, Jessica LaBuda-Hubert, Cameron Mayo, and Michael Schupp for making this idea happen.
