GLOBE Country Representatives Gather In Miami

Representatives from twenty-one countries gathered in Miami, Florida, November 17-21 1997, to learn the GLOBE science protocols and education activities and to share ideas for implementing GLOBE in their countries. "This is the largest number of GLOBE country representatives to attend a GLOBE Training," reported Lyn Wigbels, Assistant Director for GLOBE International Programs.

Working at the University of Miami School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, participants enjoyed a special report on El Nino and participated in a web chat with experts from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center. Members of the GLOBE club at Palmetto Elementary hosted the group for a tour of their GLOBE study site and garden.

Following the model of the European GLOBE Country Coordinator Committee, workshop participants from Latin American held the first meeting of the Latin American Country Coordinators Committee. The committee will help support GLOBE schools and expand and enhance GLOBE activities in their region.

Countries represented included: Chile, Croatia, Denmark, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Jordan, Namibia, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Russia, Senegal, Suriname, Tanzania, Tunisia and the United States.
