Bangladesh: Off to a Quick Start

The People's Republic of Bangladesh, a riverine country in South Asia, has become the 95th GLOBE partner country.

U.S. President Bill Clinton and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina welcomed the new GLOBE partnership during their recent meetings at the White House in Washington DC.

Bangladesh already has a team at a Train-the-Trainer workshop. "This is a wonderfully fast start-up, " said Lyn Wigbels, GLOBE Assistant Director of International Programs. "It's a clear commitment to the program."

Secretary M. Fazlur Rahman of the Ministry of Science and Technology and U.S. Ambassador Mary Ann Peters signed the official bilateral agreement in Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital city. Calvin Humphrey, the U.S. Department of Energy Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, and General Noor Uddin Khan, Bangladesh Minister for Science and Technology, also participated in the ceremony.

The Ministry of Science and Technology will serve as the GLOBE Country Coordinator. Five of the Ministry's representatives are now attending the GLOBE workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal.
