GLOBE Student Measurements Top 5 Million!

Students at Atholton Elementary School in Columbia, Maryland, have reported the 5 millionth GLOBE measurement! Since April 1995, GLOBE students have carefully taken observations in atmosphere, hydrology, land cover and soils for use in scientific research. The data from these 5 million measurements are being studied in schools on every continent and used by scientists seeking an improved understanding of Earth's environment.

The 5 millionth GLOBE measurement was of cloud cover, part of the Atholton students' daily atmosphere report for May 15, 2000. GLOBE teacher Mellie Lewis at Atholton Elementary School, was one of the very first GLOBE teachers. She has led her students in reporting data from almost 7,000 measurements since students at Atholton first reported GLOBE data, on the very first day that the GLOBE Program began, Earth Day, April 22, 1995.

Congratulations to Ms. Lewis and the GLOBE students at Atholton Elementary School, and to all the young scientists in the GLOBE Program, on their valuable contribution to our knowledge of the global environment.
