GLOBE Welcomes South Africa

On February 17, 1997, U.S. Vice President Al Gore and South African Deputy President Thabo Mbeki signed the GLOBE Agreement making South Africa the 47th country to join the GLOBE Program. The signing ceremony took place in Cape Town, South Africa. The two countries had established their commitment to becoming partners in the GLOBE Program in a Declaration of Intent signed in July 1996. This official signing of the GLOBE agreement signals South Africa's full participation in GLOBE.

South Africa plans to hold its first teacher training workshop in mid-March for teachers from ten schools in the Western Cape. Two additional teacher training workshops will be held a short time later.

We look forward to the involvement of GLOBE schools throughout South Africa!
