NIGMS funds academic research and training programs in anesthesiology and peri-operative pain. Research conducted aims to improve the understanding of the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms of anesthesia, the pharmacology of anesthetics, the effects of anesthetics on integrated organ systems, and an understanding of surgical and peri-operative pain. The institute also supports research that translates basic research observations and principles related to anesthesia into the clinical arena. NIGMS also supports the training and career development of anesthesiologists interested in basic and clinical anesthesia research.
