Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Lester M. Crawford Names Michael M. Landa, Esq., Deputy Director for Regulatory Affairs of FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition

Dr. Lester M. Crawford, Acting Commissioner of Food and Drugs, today announced the appointment of Michael M. Landa, Esq., as the Deputy Director for Regulatory Affairs, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), effective August 1, 2004.

"Mike Landa has worked tirelessly to protect consumers and promote the public health during his distinguished tenure as an FDA attorney," said Dr. Crawford. "As the Deputy Director for Regulatory Affairs, he will draw on his extensive experience to provide executive leadership for Center's important work involving major health claim petitions, the obesity initiative, and planning and executing CFSAN's enforcement strategies."

Since January 2000, Mr. Landa has served as the FDA's Deputy Chief Counsel. From March 2001 until August 2001, he was Acting Chief Counsel. From 1993 through 1999, he was in private practice as shareholder in Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe and a partner in Fenwick & West LLP where he practiced food and drug law.

During various periods between 1978 and 1993, Mr. Landa served in FDA's Office of the Chief Counsel as the Associate Chief Counsel for Medical Devices, Enforcement and Veterinary Medicine.

Mr. Landa received a J.D. from the University of Virginia, after graduating from Columbia College with a B.A. in 1971. He holds an L.L.M. from New York University, where he was the Food and Drug Law Institute Fellow during the 1977-78 academic year. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.
