CPSC, Proctor-Silex Announce Recall of Toasters

(Person in a kitchen putting bread into the toaster) Proctor-Silex is recalling about 95,000 wide-slot toasters (bread lifter being pushed down) because the heating elements can remain on after the toast pops up.

(CPSC's Chairman Ann Brown speaking) "Proctor-Silex and CPSC have received at least 24 reports from consumers of these toasters staying on after the toast popped up. There have been three reports of food fires, causing damage to kitchen cabinets. If you have one of these toasters, immediately unplug it and contact Proctor-Silex to get a free replacement toaster."

(White toaster) These are traditional upright electric toasters with single lifters (black toaster) and four extra wide slots that can toast bread or bagels.

(Both toasters) Here's how you can tell if you have one of these Proctor-Silex toasters, (black toaster being turned upside down to check for the numbers) check the model number and series code on the bottom of the toaster. (close-up of model numbers) Toasters with model number 24208 are black and chrome, (white toaster being turned upside down to look for the number) toasters with model number 24205 are white. (both toasters) They were sold at various (screen reads: "Sold Nationwide; Ames, Bradlees, Burdines, Eckerd, Rite Aid, Servistar and Walgreens) mass merchandise stores nationwide, including Ames, Bradlees, Burdines, Eckerd, Rite Aid, Servistar and Walgreens (dates shown) from April 1997 through September 1999 (price shown) for between 20 and 25 dollars.
