Press Releases # 08-222 and 08-223

Transcript

SLATE: MEGA Brands, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is recalling about 2.4 million MagnaMan Magnetic Toy Figures, and Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. Pre-school Magnetic Toys.

(Pictures of recalled items, magnets and attaching them to magnetic toys and toy figures.)

(Pictures and sounds of children playing with magnetic toys and toy figures.)

SLATE: Magnets in the toy figures, animals, and building sets can detach. Magnets found by young children can be swallowed or aspirated. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforations or blockages, which can be fatal.

(Pictures of how magnets can attract each other, including through a finger.)

SLATE: MEGA Brands and CPSC have received 44 reports of magnets coming loose from the toys, including one report of child who was found with a magnet in his mouth and another report of a 3-year-old boy receiving medical treatment to remove a magnet from his nasal cavity. There have been no reports of a child swallowing a magnet.

SLATE: The recalled MagnaMan magnetic toys are figures that have body parts that attach with magnets. They come in either a “Futuristic Warrior” or “Ancient Warrior” theme. Each figure comes with three accessories.

(Julie Vallese, Director, Office of Information and Public Affairs, US Consumer Product Safety Commission, speaking:)

This recall involves millions of toys with multiple tiny magnets. Parents should check their homes for loose or missing magnets and return the toys to Megabrands for a free replacement.

The tiny magnets are smaller than a pea but are powerful enough to attract objects many times their weight. If ingested the magnets can cause serious intestinal injury and possible death to children.
