Press Release # 00-163

Transcript

(Moving go-karts) Summer fun for many children and adults includes driving go-karts on tracks over open terrain, but your go-kart could have a hidden hazard that can cause serious injury or even death. (trees and moving go-karts) In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Manco Products Inc., of Fort Wayne, Indiana, is recalling about 91,000 go-karts for repair. (close-up of moving go-kart) Though, these go-karts have guards designed to help prevent entanglements (close-up of inside of go-kart)riders' long hair or loose clothing still can become entangled in the go-karts rotating components.

(CPSC's Chairman Ann Brown speaking) "These entanglements can happen when long hair or loose clothing get caught in the go-kart's moving parts. Riders can suffer terrible head injuries or even death. If you have one of these go-karts, stop using it until you get it repaired."

(Far view of moving go-karts) Manco Products has received a report of a 13-year-old girl from Idaho, who died from a fractured neck when her hair (demonstration of hair getting caught) got caught in the drive chain and sprocket of a go-kart she was driving. (moving go-kart) Another 13-year-old girl suffered a scalping injury, and a 16-year-old girl lost consciousness and suffered severe head trauma.

(Inside of a go-kart, list of names that the carts were sold under: Manco, Phoenix, Fox, Rattler, Coyote) The recalled go-karts were sold under the Manco, Phoenix, (close-up of steering wheel) Fox, Rattler and Coyote labels. (moving go-karts) The one and two-seat go-karts are powered by gasoline engines. (person pointing out bars) Most have brush bars to protect riders from low tree branches and other foliage. The recall involves two groups of go-karts and they can be identified by their (serial number being pointed out) serial number located on a silver label located on the (close-up of serial number label) floor pan immediately in front of the driver's seat. (deck covers being pointed out) The first group has black plastic deck covers over the rear axle and brake. (serial numbers on the screen) Their serial numbers are within the following ranges: 1757022 to 1855821, and 3000010 to 3050632. (picture of go-kart) The second group of go-karts have a cross-over jackshaft drive system. (serial numbers on the screen) These karts have serial numbers lower than 1757022. (Picture of go-karts)Outdoor power equipment dealers; specialty, discount, hardware, automotive parts supply and agricultural supply stores; and motorcycle dealers sold the go-karts nationwide (dates and price range shown on the screen) from January 1983 through July 2000 for between 600 and 2,000 dollars.

(Go-kart being repaired) Consumers should stop using these go-karts immediately and call Manco for a free repair kit with instructions for easy installation. Consumers can also contact any Manco dealer to get free installation of the repair kit.

(Go-kart) In cooperation with CPSC, Manco Products previously recalled go-karts in 1996 because their rear axles were exposed. One child died (two go-karts) and two others were seriously injured when their hair or clothing became entangled in the rotating rear axles. (go-kart) The cross-over jackshaft-type go- karts, which were part of this earlier recall, are included in the current recall. (person standing next to a go-cart) Manco will provide guards for both recalls if needed.
