Development and evaluation of long-term testing protocols for assessing the effects of EDCs and reproductive toxicants in small fish

Project Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to develop harmonized medaka multigeneration testing protocols that can be used to evaluate population-relevant endpoints (i.e., fecundity, fertility reproductive behavior, phenotypic and genotypic sex of each generation).

Project Description(s):
A series of short-term tests have been used to develop and evaluate possible endpoints (e.g., vitellogenin induction, gonadal pathology and intersex, phenotypic sexual characters, sex reversal, fecundity, and fertility) for assessing the potential for chemicals to adversely impact reproduction. The short-term methods have also been expanded into long-term protocols which allow sensitivity comparisons across endpoints, life-stages, and generations.

Project Outcomes:
These data will provide the means to extensively evaluate the impact on fish populations of chemicals which test positive in short-term reproductive tests. This will also provide information for linking the effects measured in short-term with possible population level outcomes.
