Heyward B. Davenport

HEYWARD B. DAVENPORT

Heyward B. Davenport was appointed Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) in March of 1995. Mr. Davenport oversees MBDA funded business assistance services for 14 Northeast states under the New York Region:

  • RI.
  • VA.
  • VT.
  • D.C.
  • W.VA.

Prior to joining MBDA, Mr. Davenport was Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Department of Economic Development, Minority and Women's Business Division for twelve years.

Mr. Davenport has a wealth of management, planning, financial services and community involvement experience essential in serving effectively the diverse minority community in the New York Region. Prior to Mr. Davenport's appointment as Deputy Commissioner to the New York State Department of Economic Development, he held several executive positions within the City of New York since 1970, including Commissioner, of the Model Cities Administration; Deputy Commissioner, N.Y. City Human Resources Administration and Deputy Executive Director of the New York City Department of City Planning. He also served as Executive Director of the HARYOU-Act Community Corporation, managing one of the largest community development Agencies in the Nation.

A native of Newberry, South Carolina, Mr. Davenport completed his B.A. Degree in psychology and sociology from Johnson C. Smith University, a Master Degree in psychology from Columbia University and did postgraduate work in management and administration at New York University and Duke University.
