Earth Science Resources
Earth Week Diary of a Planet - A wonderful, clickable world map of natural events each week on the planet; including the highest and lowest temperatures, severe storms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and environmentally friendly actions.
EnviroLink - Environlink's name says what it does. It provides connections to environmental groups around the world. The EnviroArts Gallery, EnviroChat, and the EnviroLink Library with its summaries of educational materials, sites, papers, current news, and projects are just a few of the features of this visually attractive and globally informative site.
Geologylink - An excellent resource to many aspects of earth science. In the Inside Geology section there are links to courses on the formation of the earth and shaping the earth's crust. There are several resources here that would be interesting to include in preparing students for GLOBE soil investigations. There are also excellent links to hydrology sites and to university course introductions on rivers, streams and surface water, that again provide excellent background for GLOBE hydrology studies. These are not difficult texts, but abbreviated notes. The Earth Today section is a brief update of our planet's daily activity, whether it is the release of poisonous gases from a crater in Indonesia or the rumblings of a volcano in Alaska. An excellent way for the classroom to be aware of natural events around the world and to spark GLOBEmail to other schools to discover how they are being affected. There's also an Ask the Professor question section and a K-12 Forum to discuss earth science issues and projects.
Journey to Planet Earth - Helps students understand the most critical and timely issues facing the natural sciences in the 21st century. Through an interdisciplinary approach, these programs reach beyond the physical sciences and draw connections to politics, economics, sociology, and history.
Natural Hazards
The Nine Planets - An incredible resource which displays NASA's images of the planets, linked information on relevant mythology, fascinating facts, great comparisons, and in-depth research.
U.S. Geological Survey - Some of the information on the development and use of topographical maps is useful in studying your watershed for the GLOBE hydrology investigations. There are many links and information sheets on water quality, flooding, stream-flow and water use. There is also a history of map-making that ties in well with remote-sensing.
