Battery Isolator reduces charging system workload.

Battery Isolator reduces charging system workload.

Cole Hersee Co.
Boston, MA 02127 2467
Jan 16, 2009 Smart Battery Isolator 48525/48530 prevents loads on auxiliary battery from draining starting battery, regardless of alternator type. Available in 85 and 200 A versions, product reduces charging system workload by not connecting to auxiliary battery until primary battery is charged to 13.2 V. This minimizes strain on charging components, and no diode efficiency losses occur during use. Product also allows bi-directional charging from alternator or other power chargers/converters.

ASTM International
West Conshohocken, PA 19428-2959
January 16, 2009 - ASTM International is inviting paper submissions for 30th Symposium on Pesticide Formulations and Delivery Systems: Regulations and Innovation, to be held October 20-22, 2009. Participants can submit preliminary abstracts by May 22, 2009 and will be notified of acceptance by June 26. With Dr. P. V. Shah of the EPA as keynote speaker, the event will feature presentations on biopesticides, drift reduction, and development of multiactive formulations as well as industry commentary.

'Two-Faced' Bioacids Put a New Face on Carbon Nanotube Self-Assembly

National Institute of Standards & Technology
Gaithersburg, MD 20899-1070
January 16, 2009 - A study by NIST and Rice University found a process that enables carbon nanotubes to self-assemble in rows. Advantageous to emerging electronic/materials technologies, nanotubes have been ineffectively created using solvents and DNA. NIST researchers found that bile acid, having a 2-faced geometry with opposing reactions to water, forms hollow rods that house rod-shaped nanotubes. While more development is needed, study gives recipe to create aligned arrangements of individual carbon nanotubes.

Super Sensitive Gas Detector Goes Down the Nanotubes

National Institute of Standards & Technology
Gaithersburg, MD 20899-1070
January 16, 2009 - Titled "Fabrication and Gas Sensing Performance of Parallel Assemblies of Metal Oxide Nanotubes Supported by Porous Aluminum Oxide Membranes," NIST paper describes method of creating gas detectors sensitive enough to some day register gas emissions from single cells. The sensor's sensitivity is derived from responses of gas interacting with nanotube interiors. This could provide a way to determine if drugs or nanoparticles harm cells or to study how cells communicate.

Insights into Polymer Film Instability Could Aid High Tech Industries

National Institute of Standards & Technology
Gaithersburg, MD 20899-1070
January 16, 2009 - While exploring the properties of polymer formation, NIST scientists have determined that temperature can play a decisive role in determining which of two competing processes - crystallization and dewetting - will dominate when semicrystalline polymer film hardens, thereby granting qualitatively different properties to finished film. This discovery could improve methods of creating stable crystalline films that are widely used in electronics applications.
