Comparison Table for State Treatment Planning Areas

This comparison table provides the relative position (from lowest to highest) for the data for each age group and State treatment planning area which can be found at Substate Estimates from the 2002-2004 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health. Using this comparison table, you can locate where each State treatment planning area falls in the distribution of all the treatment planning areas for the Nation by variable and age group. For example, if a State treatment planning area had 8% illicit drug use in the past month (comparison Table 1) among the 12-17 age group, then that State treatment planning group was in Group 1 (the lowest group) of current illicit drug use among youth in the Nation.  If, however, that State treatment planning area's rate for youth's current illicit drug use was 16%, then it would be in Group 7, that is, the group having the highest rate in the Nation.

We recommend that you use the PDF format for printing this table.

Ranges of Substate Regions Categorized into Seven Groups from Lowest to Highest Estimate1, by Age Group: Percentages, Annual Averages Based on 2002, 2003, and 2004 NSDUHs
Table Age Group Number of
Estimates
Suppressed
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Group 5 Group 6 Group 7
*Please note that because the average annual rates for the first use of marijuana were low for the 26% or older age group and had an abbreviated range, no groups have been created for it.

Note: All 357 substate regions were used to create these groups instead of the 340 regions that were used to create maps representing the 12% or older age group. Estimates for these 357 substate regions have been ranked from lowest to highest for each outcome/age group and divided into seven categories. The three lowest groups represent the lowest third of the estimates, with the lowest group having 16 regions, the next lowest group having 32 regions, and the next lowest group having 71 regions each (except in cases of ties, where the numbers may vary a little). The three highest groups were created similarly. The middle group represents the 119 regions that fall into the middle third.

1These scales are a companion piece to the age group tables found in the report on Substate Estimates from the 2002-2004 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health. Estimates are based on a survey-weighted hierarchical Bayes estimation approach.
