GLOBE Stars

Zakladni Skola, Hradecka Street, Telc, Czech Republic

17 October 1997

Elementary students from Zakladni Skola in Telc, South Bohemia, Czech Republic, and their GLOBE Teacher, Bozenka Kaderavkova, have been actively participating in GLOBE since 1995. In the beginning, these students worked diligently taking GLOBE measurements, but they did not have a computer. They had to fax their data to TEREZA, the Czech Country Coordinating organization, which then sent the data via the Internet to the GLOBE Student Data Server.

Feeling that having a computer would allow them to more fully participate in the GLOBE Program, these students decided to earn money to buy a computer by collecting and selling waste paper and herbs. The students were able to collectively gather 279 kg of orange peels, 269 kg of wild rose, 61 kg of nettle, 83 kg of birch leaves, 33 kg of coltsfoot flowers and 1050 kg of waste paper. Now the students are sending their data directly to the GLOBE Student Data Server via the Internet with their own computer.

The Zakladni Skola students have also been involved in the Air Pollution Project Europe program for five years, measuring and reporting the pH of precipitation. Their findings helped result in the switching of the the heating system in Telc from coal to gas fuel. Congratulations to these ambitious students for their wonderful accomplishments!
