marlow12.jpg Congratulations to the students and teachers of the Marlow Middle School GLOBE Program on winning Oklahoma's highest environmental science education award. Each year, the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and the Oklahoma Conservation Commission recognizes outstanding environmental education programs which can demonstrate that students have become more interested in science. At Marlow Middle School, there was plenty of evidence of success!

Inspired by their activities in GLOBE since 1995, GLOBE students from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades formed a science club. One of their first activities was to establish a recycling program at the school, since there was no community recycling program. With help from a Weyerhaeuser "Excellence in Recycling" grant, science club members are buying bins and other supplies to help them recycle paper and cans.

"GLOBE studies help motivate students to be environmentally aware," said GLOBE teacher Terri Hollarn. Hollarn and seventh grade English teacher Arleta Freeman worked with the science club in applying for the grant. GLOBE Teacher Bill Ray is now serving as advisor to the science club. Congratulations to each of these teachers and all the GLOBE students of Marlow Middle School.
