GLOBE STARS in Bolivia

17 October 1997

Congratulations to Bolivia, the first GLOBE country in South America to begin reporting data! Bolivian teachers Mario Acho Nina and Franz Espinosa Navarro, pictured here, were trained in the GLOBE science activities at an August 1995 workshop in Nueva Helvecia, Uruguay, near Montevideo. Students at two schools, La Escuela Basica in Sankajahuira, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, and Unidad Agropecuaria Campesina in Tiwanaku, the cradle of one of Bolivia's most important pre-Columbian civilizations, began taking GLOBE measurements and reporting their observations on April 2, 1996.

On Earth Day, Bolivia will celebrate its one year anniversary of partnership in the GLOBE Program. The Ministry of Sustainable Develpment and the Environment is responsible for implementing GLOBE in Bolivia, and held a training workshop for additional GLOBE teachers in March--we look forward to the involvement of these newly trained teachers!
