Histone Deacetylases Provide Tailwind for Cell Cycle Hypothesis
Make room, Aβ: HDACs, DNA repair, and gene regulation are here to stay. A spate of underwhelming recent clinical trial results has prompted quiet reappraisals of the amyloid hypothesis among some scientists in the Alzheimer field. At the same time, basic research is advancing other pathways that may participate in the causes underlying age-related neurodegeneration. MIT’s Li-Huei Tsai and Dohoon Kim will showcase one such pathway. They and others propose that p25/cdk5 induction by age-related stressors deregulates histone deacetylases. This would lift a physiological repression of cell cycle genes as a cost of enhancing DNA repair. And all this precedes actual neurodegeneration, the scientists say. Aβ plays a part in this scheme, but not the lead. Join Tsai, Kim, Bruce Yankner, Mark Mattson, Rachael Neve, and other thought leaders for a Live Webinar. Hear how HDACs and the cell cycle fit into the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s, and join the debate.
