Washington, D.C. -- The Department of the Navys Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity San Diego (California) will receive a Quality Achievement Award for improving customer service and saving tax dollars.
The award will be presented by U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Jim King during the 10th Annual National Conference on Federal Quality on:
Director King also will present Fort Benning with the Presidential Award for Quality, the governments top honor for quality improvement. The National Conference on Federal Quality convenes Wednesday, July 9 and adjourns Friday, July 11.
The Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA) San Diego is the largest ship-repair facility in California. With price and quality advantages over private facilities, SIMA routinely is the ship-repair facility of choice for the Navy and other federal customers. SIMAs Total Quality Program, implemented in August 1994, includes a Strategic Business Plan that has increased repair productivity more than 30 percent. SIMAs customers include the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and West Coast Navy shore commands. Repair services offered by SIMA include welding, equipment calibration, machining and preventive maintenance. SIMA performs repairs to auxiliary engineering equipment, in addition to combat systems on ships, aircraft carriers, submarines, and special warfare and assault craft.
