Washington, D.C. -- President Clinton has approved national and locality-based pay raises averaging 2.8 percent to the nations 1.4 million white-collar federal employees.
The President signed the Executive Order approving the pay hikes on Monday, December 29. The raises take effect on the first, full pay period beginning on or after January 1, 1998.
The Executive Order contains the official 1998 General Schedule -- the basic pay schedule that applies to white-collar federal employees which reflects a 2.3 percent pay increase. In addition the Executive Order provides the locality-based pay increase for the 32 locality pay areas in the contiguous U.S. In most of the 32 locality pay areas, the net pay increase resulting from the combination of the general increase and the applicable locality pay increase will be between 2.45 and 3.5 percent.
In signing the order, the President also authorized a 2.3 percent national pay raise for members of the Senior Executive Service.
The Executive Branch of the federal government employed 1.85 million men and women as of October 1997, down from 2.18 million in January 1993.
