OPM Kicks Off "Help Yourself to Better Health" Initiative

Washington, D.C. -- On January 29, 2002, United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Kay Coles James will kick off OPM's "Help Yourself to Better Health" initiative. The program, which is being spearheaded by OPM's Office of Human Resources and EEO, is designed to help OPM employees have a better quality of life.

"Each New Year, many of us are prompted to make new resolutions to improve ourselves and our lives," Director James said. "We may decide we want to eat healthier, lose some weight, or exercise regularly. But often, in the hectic events that make up our lives, we don't follow through on some or all of our resolutions. This year I am committed to helping our employees stick with their resolutions for better health."

To accomplish this, OPM is launching the "Help Yourself to Better Health" initiative which will begin with a health and wellness fair today. At this health fair, OPM employees can receive free blood pressure and bodyfat screenings, tension relieving chair massages, food and nutritional information, and many other helpful services.

Later in the week, OPM employees will be able to attend a special nutritional food event and, weather permitting, join those in the Office of the Director in a Power Walk.

"We are encouraging all of our employees to take advantage of these helpful services. There is no time like the present to recommit ourselves to our resolutions of becoming healthier individuals in 2002," Director James added.

- END -

OPM oversees the federal work force and provides the American public with up-to-date employment information. OPM also supports U.S. agencies with personnel services and policy leadership including staffing tools, guidance on labor-management relations and programs to improve work force performance.
