VICE PRESIDENT TO GIVE OPM MULTIPLE HAMMER AWARDS;
OTHER AGENCIES GET HONORS FOR CUTTING COSTS

Washington, D.C. -- Vice President Al Gore and U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Jim King will present Hammer Awards to teams of employees from OPM and other federal agencies for their accomplishments in improving customer service and cutting red tape and wasteful spending on:

Wednesday, July 13, 3:00 p.m. at the
U.S. Office of Personnel Management
1900 E Street, NW (auditorium)
Washington, DC

The Vice President presents Hammer Awards to federal employees who have contributed to the Clinton Administration's goal of making government work better and cost less.

Specifically, OPM's Hammer Award winners will be recognized for their contributions to the abolishment of the Federal Personnel Manual; the development and implementation of buyout legislation in the Executive Branch; the production and transmission of satellite broadcasts for human resources professionals; and, the development of automated systems that screen and rate job applications, leading to the referral of qualified candidates to agency hiring officials and the demise of the SF-171 government job application.

The Vice President will present a special Hammer Award to the National Partnership Council for its historic and unprecedented success in laying the foundation for labor-management partnerships in federal agencies.

Media must secure admission to the ceremony by calling Mike Orenstein on 202-606-1800 by close-of-business Monday, July 11.
