OPM RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING FEDERAL WORK AND FAMILY PROGRAMS
Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Jim King today announced the winners of this year's Director's Award for Outstanding Work and Family Programs. The award presentations will be made to agencies that have innovative work and family programs that serve as models for other federal agencies.
The awards will be presented at the "Caregivers at the Workplace" conference held at the:
U.S. Office of Personnel Management Auditorium
1900 E Street, NW
9:30 a.m., Thursday, June 9, 1994
This year's top award winners are the Social Security Administration, Department of Health and Human Services; Department of Justice; and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Department of Agriculture. All three agencies are being recognized for utilizing a wide variety of family-friendly programs which assist their employees in meeting work and family responsibilities.
Director King praised the recipients saying, "These agencies have demonstrated a strong commitment to helping employees meet the conflicting demands of their work and family lives. Family-friendly policies make good sense for employees and good sense for government. By embracing programs and policies that help federal workers balance their professional and home responsibilities, the federal government will be able to recruit and retain top talent in the workplace."
As an employer, the federal government assists employed caregivers by providing access to information on child and elder care and by offering personnel flexibilities that help employees meet work and family demands. Earlier this year, President Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act which guarantees time off to employees for the care of a family member.
Over the last few years, many agencies have made significant use of workplace flexibilities such as flexiplace and the leave sharing policies to help their employees.
In addition to the awards ceremony, the media and federal work and family representatives are invited to attend the all-day conference which includes workshops on child and elder care.
