TIME-OFF GRANTED TO EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

Washington, D.C.--President Bill Clinton has authorized time-off for federal civilian employees participating in relief efforts and those faced with reordering their lives after the terrible devastation of the Los Angeles earthquake.

Federal employees who are needed for emergency law enforcement, relief, or clean-up efforts authorized by federal, state or local officials can be excused to assist with relieve efforts. Federal employees who are covered under are members of the National Guard or Reserves are covered under military leave provisions.

Office of Personnel Management Director Jim King has notified the heads of executive departments and agencies of the President's decision allowing them to "use their discretion to excuse from duty, without charge to leave or loss of pay, any such employee who is faced with a personal emergency because of the EARTHQUAKE and who can be spared from his or her usual responsibilities.

"We understand and sympathize with the overwhelming losses suffered by those whose lives have been touched by the EARTHQUAKE. People need time to get their homes and lives back together," said Jim King. "Many federal workers who face tremendous hardships continue to perform necessary duties and provide other emergency services to the area."
