May 29, 1997: The U.S. Office of Personnel Management presents the 10th Annual National Conference on Federal Quality, July 9 - 11, 1997, at the Sheraton Washington Hotel, in Washington, D.C. To commemorate this anniversary milestone, conference planners have lined-up a first-rate list of participants and speakers that includes recognized leaders in the quality movement in government and corporate America. May 29, 1997: Under an improved State Income Tax Withholding Program, states wishing to receive annuitant tax withholding no longer will have to obtain election forms from annuitants and maintain their accounts. Instead, states can agree to have OPM assume administrative responsibility for federal annuitants. [News Release]

May 21, 1997: The U.S. Office of Personnel Management is extending Fiscal Year (FY) 1997 voluntary early retirement authority to help agencies planning for possible use of voluntary separation incentive payments during the first quarter of FY 1998. [News Release]

May 16, 1997: To ensure that veterans continue to receive the employment advantages they have earned by serving in the Armed Forces, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management has produced a policy handbook for federal personnel specialists. VetGuide is a comprehensive, detailed compilation of the special rights and privileges that veterans have in federal civil service employment. [News Release]

May 13, 1997: Federal employees who receive limited relocation allowances while serving in assignments away from their permanent duty locations for extended periods of time now can receive the locality-based pay of the temporary official duty station, according to new rules issued by OPM. May 9, 1997: In honor of Older Americans Month, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management will sponsor a conference on May 14, 1997, to focus on ways federal employees, caregivers and elderly relatives can celebrate a richer, healthier, and more enjoyable life. [News Release]

May 6, 1997: President Clinton has authorized time off for federal employees who have been victimized by the devastating flooding in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. [News Release]

May 6, 1997: The U.S. Office of Personnel Management has approved a demonstration project for the U.S. Department of Commerce. The purpose is to help the agency prepare for the 21st Centurys service needs of the American public, and the human resource needs of the agencys workforce. [News Release]

May 2, 1997: Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) President Dr. Antonio Flores and Office of Personnel Management Director Jim King today launched new recruitment efforts to bring greater access to federal employment information for students attending HACU institutions. The Partnership Agreement signed by Dr. Flores and Director King will provide five HACU institutions located throughout the United States with touch screen computers that provide nationwide federal job information. May 1, 1997: All federal employees and retirees now may appeal certain unfavorable pension rulings directly to the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB). A final rule issued by the Office of Personnel Management and published in the April 28 Federal Register streamlines the process for resolving pension-ruling disputes for employees and annuitants covered by the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS). Individuals covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) already had the direct-appeals route available to them. [News Release]
