OSRE manages the enforcement of EPA's national hazardous waste cleanup programs:
- Superfund (officially known as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act),
- the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA),
- the Oil Pollution Act (OPA), and
- underground storage tanks (UST).
We support and provide the means for the regions and states to vigorously and effectively enforce these statutes, and it is the skill and commitment of the people in OSRE that allow us to accomplish that mission. We are advocates for enforcement perspectives in national program policies and regulations. Our goals are to achieve prompt site cleanup and maximum liable party participation in performing and paying for cleanup in ways which promote environmental justice and fairness.
The Office of Site Remediation Enforcement has two divisions and a support staff.

In some situations, private parties pay for clean ups that have been conducted by EPA using money from the Superfund. Non-cleanup related enforcement under RCRA is the responsibility of our sister organization, the Office of Civil Enforcement.
